September 11 (2001) attacks on America not compatible with Islam

2. SEPTEMBER 11 (2001) ATTACKS ON AMERICA NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ISLAM

The Muslims in general have good reasons to condemn the acts of 9/11 terrorism in America. Islam, the second-largest religion of the world, is a powerful champion of peace. The very word Islam comes from the Arabic word "Salam," which literally means peace. The Quran warns against breaking the peace on earth and creating troubles (11:85; 26:183). Some peaceful provisions of Islam are cited below:

First, Islam maintains that a person cannot bear the blame or burden of another (17:15). This obviously invalidates the legality of killing thousands of innocent people in America. Second, Islam considers suicide as 'haram' or illegal. So a deliberate choice of killing oneself in the process of committing terrorism appears to run short of divine approval. Third, terrorism conducted in the name of Islamic holy wars has little, if any, resemblance to the tradition of the Prophet of Islam. He fought holy wars in self-defense, upon being attacked for no fault other than practicing religion.

When he had to fight such wars, he told his warriors not to harm the women, the children, or even the fruitful trees of the enemy. The Quran urged him to agree to a treaty if enemy side wants one (5:2; 8:86). He never fought any war like an imperialist. But he fought battles in a straightforward manner, and with moral underpinnings.

It appears from above that Islam has no causal link with those who commit terrorism in the name of Islam. Generally speaking, terrorism is not subject to any religious boundary, and an act of terrorism seldom enjoys any religious backing. We therefore justifiably do not blame Christianity for Irish Republican Army terrorism or Hinduism for the murder of Mahatma Gandhi by a Hindu extremist. Conclusively speaking, terrorism is a heinous crime and therefore deserves exemplary punishment.
