20 : HOW SCIENCE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR THE MUSLIMS
People
with orthodoxy or limited Islamic knowledge have
the tradition of blaming science for deviating
Islam to the path of liberalism or modernism.
This is certainly a misplaced blame. The blame
you mean for science is not due for science itself
but for your wrong use of technology, the fruit
of science. In fact, science (or wisdom) is the
attribute of God and feature of Quran. There is
nothing wrong with science; instead it is a means
to better understanding of God created Universe
as well as for controlling nature and benefiting
humanity with technological devices. The early
Muslims particularly under the Abbasids (750-1258)
gave due weight to science and thereby they ushered
in the Golden Age of Islam, claiming leadership
on the world stage. The Muslims were dislodged
from that leadership after invasion of the Mongols
in 1258. Thereafter science took a back seat among
the Muslims and so did their fortune as well.
You can therefore see a direct relation between
science and prosperity. Such prosperity can be
very much Islamic, as described below:
(i) Scientific inventions can help Islamic practices
in a big way. For example, you now use alarm clock
to get up for morning prayers and start and end
fasting on time, take airplane trip to Mecca for
pilgrimage, use loudspeaker, printing machine,
TV, internet etc. to propagate Islam. If you blame
science, why do you use these technological devices?
(ii) Science is synonymous with power. By using
knowledge of science, Britain achieved Industrial
Revolution which gave it an edge in military might
and enabled it to build the largest empire, much
to the harm of Muslim interests worldwide. Thanks
to science, the West now holds the key to world
powers, with virtual monopoly in nuclear powers.
Science explains their military supremacy over
the Muslim world in the land, water and air. Do
you still want to leave science in the deep freeze
and make your economic and political subordination
permanent? Do not cheat yourself this way anymore.
Wake up to the importance of scientific research
for necessary development of both consumer and
defense products. That will help correct the balance
of powers and enhance deterrence necessary for
world peace.
(iii) Last but not the least, science will contribute
to economic prosperity by promoting efficiency
in production as well as distribution of necessary
goods.
