16 : PRAYER RESTRAINS PEOPLE FROM SINFUL DEEDS
If
properly performed, prayer can help you from sinful
actions (29:45) at least in 2 ways: (i) it tends
to fill your mind with a sense of piety and purity
that gives spiritual inspiration to do good and
avoid bad things. (ii) the contents of the Quran
recited in prayer make you aware of what is good
and bad.
The above, however, does not guarantee a habitual
and diehard sinner to change overnight into a
perfect saint. In fact, everyone has a certain
level of natural tendency to do good or bad. Prayer
just improves upon that. This is true for both
individual and general cases. As an example, you
take a baseline crime statistics for a certain
area. Then you set up a mosque in that area. After
few years of prayers in that mosque by local Muslims,
if you take crime statistics again, you will almost
certainly see a drop in crime rate for that area
unless there is any intervening factors like famine,
organized crime activity etc. If exceptionally
you see a coexistence of both prayer and sin in
any person or society, that may be attributable
to hastily and imperfectly performed prayer.
