40 : SMALL VERSUS LARGE RECITATION: WHICH IS BETTER IN PRAYER?
In
prayer congregations, Imams (leader of prayer)
are sometimes found to recite very lengthy verses
that often do not make religious sense. Even if
he may intend to gain more blessings by using
longer verses, that may not always be recommended.
The Prophet left advice to make congregational
prayer as small as desirable keeping in view the
ability of the weakest attendees of the congregation.
Ordinarily, the Imam is not required to check
physical ability of each worshipper every time
before prayer. He should however assume about
chances of greater presence of weaker persons
in larger congregation and therefore he ought
to recite smaller verses in larger congregation.
In fact, there is nothing wrong with using relatively
small verses in large mass prayers. If you personally
choose bigger verses, you can use that for privately
performed optional prayers. The Prophet as a rule
led his mass prayer in mosque and then disappeared
to his private room inside mosque to continue
his lengthy optional prayer. It will however be
undesirable if you recite larger verses in large
gathering because of two reasons: (i) that will
inflict hardships on the weakest in attendance
and (ii) lengthy prayer may scare away some potential
worshippers with shaky faith. If this happens,
you are probably doing more harm than help to
Islam. Be reminded that greater congregation with
small recitation is decidedly preferable to small
gathering for lengthy recitation.
Small recitation in bigger congregation will instead
be pro-Islamic, with at least 2 potential benefits:
(i) such small recitation will put a cap upon
any possible proud feeling of the Imam under Satanic
inspiration. (ii) smaller prayer will make it
easier for the weaker worshippers and encourage
the marginal believers to attend prayer which
will result in bigger congregation. So it should
be a desirable rule unless it is otherwise justified
that you offer relatively smaller verses for larger
congregation.
