13 : WHY ISLAM IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR THE AFRICANS
Africa,
the continent traditionally dominant with animism
(spirits worship) and other polytheisms, is the
target of missionary efforts of various competing
religious groups. It is, however, up to the African
people to choose a right religion for them. The
following will explain why Islam is the best fit
for them.
(i) Theory of Equality: Islam promoted
the idea of equality among man as the creation
of same God. The Quran revealed the mystery behind
remarkable diversity among people, saying He made
them into different races based on ethnicity,
color etc., for the sake of their identity (49:13).
Any attempt to use such natural diversity for
discriminatory treatment will therefore be unauthorized,
irrational and condemnable. The Prophet, during
his farewell address, further clarified this point,
saying that "O people, none is higher than
the other unless he/she is higher in obedience
to God. No Arab is superior to a non-Arab except
in piety." He also promoted the concept of
universal "brotherhood" taking ideas
from the Quran (49:10).
(ii) Practice of Equality: Islam did everything
possible to translate the above theory of human
equality into practice. For example, the Muslims
regardless of their stations have to line up side
by side during prayers at the mosque. Likewise,
during pilgrimage in Mecca, people with any background
from any country perform rituals that make no
difference among them. Islam treats everyone including
even the king and subject with perfect equality
when it comes to legal treatment. Like in Christianity,
there is no top-down ranking among the Muslim
priests. In this way, Islam achieved a remarkable
degree of equality.
(iii) Specialty of Africa: Islam has a unique
historical bond with Africa. During the most difficult
days for the early Muslims, the Prophet dispatched
the first batch of emigrants to the African nation
Ethiopia (then Abyssinia) for safety from Meccan
brutality. The Prophet honored an African black
named Billal to be the first caller to prayer
(the 2nd highest position in mosque) in Islamic
history. He also had many high level companions
with African origin. Traditionally, the Africans
were more receptive to Islam as tens of thousands
among them were converted by the Arab traders.
This made Africa into a continent with second
largest Muslim population after Asia, the continent
where Saudi Arabia, the birth place of Islam is
located.
