18 : ISLAMIZATION OF UN-ISLAMIC CULTURES

Islamic has a set of values which play a role in shaping up the Muslim cultures like the way they eat, dress, walk, bathe and so on. In many cases these cultures are at variance with those of other people. This does not mean that there is always a high wall of difference between Islamic and un-Islamic cultures. There are many un-Islamic cultures that you can make Islamic by taking away sinful elements or injecting Islamic values. Let us now give some examples of how many of the un-Islamic cultures can be converted to Islamic.

Example #1: Islam generally supports sports and games on health grounds. Despite that, it prohibits some of them in particular for violation of dress code among other reasons.

These entertainment cultures can be made legal through reorganization in the light of Islam. For example, soccer game can be made Islamic if played with long pant on like the case of cricket games. Similarly other games can meet Islamic criteria by avoiding cruelty or conflict with prayer times etc.

Example #2: Birthday party draws objections mainly for cutting of cakes decorated with candle lighting following tradition of fire/light worship and by extension considering light as symbol for enhancing longevity or other blessings. If you replace the culture of candle lighting with that of prayer for long life on the occasion of birthday party, the birthday party will probably have no objection from Islamic viewpoint.

Example #3: Sometimes law of the land may clash with Islamic values. In such case, you may apply your tactics to make wise adjustment in a way that you comply with Islam without violating local laws. For example, if you live in a country that does not allow the Muslim women to wear headscarf in public places, one possible way out of this is to wear wigs. This is, however, a temporary provision and should not last indefinitely.

Example #4: You can divert any anti-Islamic discussion or dialogue to an Islamic or ethical theme. For example, if you hear from others talking about adultery or sexual pleasures, you can intervene by introducing the themes of benefits from legal marriage and earn credit for good action.

The above samples show how you can bring un-Islamic cultures in line with Islamic values by using your Islamic knowledge and wise tactics. Then your life will be both enjoyable and pious at the same time.
